KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, head and leader of the Hizb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) party, at his residence and congratulated him advent of Eid al-Fitr, a statement from Presidential Palace said on Monday.
Hekmatyar thanked President Ghani for visiting him at his residence for Eid greetings and hailed his efforts for ceasefire. Hekmatyar said peace was the dire need of the people and HIA fully supported ceasefire and peace process, the presidential statement added.
The president said that three-day ceasefire showed that peace was a nation-wide demand and there was a national consensus existed on this.
“We have been consulting with different political stakeholder on peace and your vision in this regard is highly appreciated,” the president said as quoted in the statement.
On Sunday President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani visited former President Hamid Karzai at his residence and exchanged Eid greetings. Both leaders discussed ceasefire during a meeting, according to a statement from Presidential Palace.
Former President Karzai termed President Ghani’s decision of ceasefire a fresh step towards durable peace and stability in the country and congratulated the nation on the truce, the statement said.
