Tehran– Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told an Iranian news agency today that Afghanistan under Taliban rule enjoys “sovereignty and security,” a marked shift from Tehran’s earlier criticism.
Speaking in an interview with Khabar Online he stated that “the Islamic Emirate has established control over Afghanistan, bringing security and unified governance to the country.” He noted that unlike the past, when various groups ruled different regions, the Islamic Emirate has solidified its authority over the past three and a half years.
Araqchi emphasized the need to address challenges and find solutions that align with Iran’s national interests.
Araqchi, who recently visited Kabul to meet with Islamic Emirate officials, highlighted key issues affecting Iran’s interests, including water rights, the presence of Afghan refugees in Iran, and the threat of Daesh. He explained that these topics require dialogue between the two nations. While Iran has not officially recognized the Islamic Emirate, Araqchi noted that significant trade continues despite sanctions.
Afghan analysts see this as a bid to counter Pakistan’s influence, though locals remain skeptical of foreign intentions amidst ongoing economic strife.
